With an unexpected color pairing and an eye on sustainability, the future of the kitchen looks beautiful indeed

deVOL has revealed details from their most recent renovation project, hidden in a Fisherman's Cottage in St Ives.

Aptly described as a 'big kitchen in a small cottage,' the space exhibits a range of interior statements that will set trends far beyond Cornwall – but none more so than its color collaboration. The pairing between deVOL's bespoke green and their Scullery Yellow is the combination we never saw coming – and one that we expect design enthusiasts will mirror long into the near year.

'Every time we see this yellow, we love it a bit more; we think it's the fact that it's not bright but very mellow and alluring,' says deVOL in their discussion of the new color trend. And, in a nod to sustainability, the kitchen powerhouse shared that the painted cupboards once made up a display at their Cotes Mill headquarters – prompting you to give new life to pieces with a lick of paint.

However, the yellow and green pairing is not the only feature set to take over kitchens in 2022. Here, we list our favorite modern kitchen ideas from deVOL's Fisherman's Cottage, so you can mirror its style in your home.

Embrace open shelving

Open shelving is more than a small kitchen storage idea. It is a stylish feature that should become the understated but nonetheless beautiful centerpiece of your kitchen. This minimalistic storage solution encourages you to keep your space uncluttered and your utensils, glasses, and crockery to a minimum – as your possessions take center stage.

Turn your chopping board into a stylish accessory

Designer Shea McGee may have paved the way for chopping boards on Dream Home Makeover, but this series was just the start of this effortless kitchen trend

Rather than hiding the chopping board in the corner of the kitchen (or choosing a smaller alternative), deVOL has added a large chopping board in the center of the countertop to reinforce that while the kitchen is a practical space, it can look ever-so stylish too.

Accentuate your space with a mirror

Conventionally, you are less likely to discover a mirror in a kitchen, but deVOL is reshaping design rules – and reminding us of the limitless power of the timeless feature.

While the 'big kitchen in a small cottage' is not compact, the mirror emphasizes the space's size further by using the room's natural light to create a reflection that makes the kitchen feel more spacious – and look even more timeless.

Create an ambient space with task lighting

Massimo Buster Minale, the founder of Buster + Punch, has already highlighted the importance of task lighting – and here, deVOL has emphasized it further. The kitchen exemplifies the task lighting technique by only implementing lights in areas of activity rather than an overpowering light in the center of the room. This expert kitchen lighting idea creates a cottage-like ambiance the property deserves – and it's worth recreating, wherever you are.

While these style tips will help you recreate the Fisherman's Cottage at home, prices for a Classic English Kitchen by deVOL start from £25,000 (approximately $35,000).
