Following the release of their FÄLTMAL quillow, IKEA has announced yet another branch into the fashion industry – only this time, in the form of denim, essentially creating a new form of IKEA hacks themselves.

The home decor chain revealed their collaboration with MUD Jeans, a sustainable denim label that mirrors their ethical values. Together, the brands are recycling old denim into KLIPPAN sofa covers.

Each sofa cover is made from 40% post-consumer recycled denim, which equates to two pairs of pre-loved jeans. This inventive new method will save approximately 27,000 liters of water and cut the carbon footprint by 67% when compared to the industry standard.

The collaboration similarly aims to reduce landfill waste, as less than 1% of old denim is currently recycled into new garments. In joining forces, they hope to accelerate the change of adopting circular business models for the greater good of the planet.

In his discussion of the collaboration, Piotr Jakubiak, Deployment Leader at New Business and Innovation Deployment at IKEA Sweden, explains:

‘The KLIPPAN sofa is an iconic IKEA product. By offering new sofa covers made from recycled materials, we can help customers to renew their sofa and reuse materials. We are happy to work together with MUD Jeans to make the KLIPPAN sofa cover with recycled denim. This simple action will give new life to the sofas and worn jeans.’

Malin Nordin, Head of Circular Development at the Inter IKEA Group, emphasizes IKEA and MUD’s shared values, suggesting that ‘IKEA wants to grow within the boundaries of the planet’ and believes ‘all materials are valuable and should not be wasted.’

‘By joining forces with MUD Jeans, we can work together to secure new sources of recycled materials and develop products using post-consumer materials such as recycled jeans,’ Malin adds.
